Cretans Commemorate Greek Independence Day

Greek Independence day was commemorated across Melbourne with a bumper number of events.

Whereas 2021’s events were largely postponed as a result of COVID restrictions, this year saw the wider community play a little bit of catch up and allowed dancers, members and committee representatives of the Cretan Brotherhood to proudly participate.

On Sunday the 20th of March, the Cretan Brotherhood sent representatives to the Shrine of remembrance for a wreath laying ceremony.

Although the annual Parade was not held this year an enthusiastic cross section of Melbourne’s Greek community attended the event which saw speeches from Political and Community leaders.

On Wednesday the 23rd of March the Greek Community of Melbourne hosted a cocktail event at the Hellenic Museum.

Cretan Brotherhood representatives attended the event and rubbed shoulders with fellow community organisation leaders.

On Friday the 25th of March the Cretan Brotherhood was represented at the Inaugural Grecian Ball, held at the Grand Hyatt in Melbourne’s CBD.

A number of members attended the event and the Cretan Brotherhood’s own dance group has the honour of performing for the 500 strong crowd, alongside the Greek Community of Melbourne’s own dance group.

The Grecian Ball was co-organised by the Greek Community of Melbourne, Greek Archdiocese of Australia and 25th of March Independence Day Committee. The event was well supported and was well received by all!
