On the first weekend of August, the Cretan Brotherhood participated in the official welcoming of Archbishop Makarios Griniezakis to Melbourne.
Archbishop Makarios Griniezakis was unanimously elected as the Archbishop of the Holy Archdiocese of Australia in May 2019 and participated in a two week tour of Melbourne to meet the local Greek Community.
On Saturday the 3rd of August the Cretan Brotherhood was present with the Pancretan Association, Panmacedonian Association and many other members of the Greek Community to welcome his eminence at Melbourne Airport.
After addressing the crowd of over 200 including a large contingent of local priests the Archbishop travelled to South Melbourne Church for a special service.
The Cretans of Melbourne attended the ceremony is large numbers with even the typical Melbourne rain unable to keep crowds away. The service concluded with a touching speed from the Archbishop sharing his love for the Greek culture and the responsibility to protect it.
Later Saturday night, the Cretans of Melbourne held a welcome dinner for the Archbishop at the Cretan Village. President of the Cretan Brotherhood, Michael Houdalakis made a welcome speech on behalf of the Cretan Brotherhood and the Pancretan Association.
In his speech he said that we are proud that the Archbishop is from the island we love and that us Cretans “το τονίζουμε πώς είναι από την Κρήτη “.
